Gluten
Malt vinegar is made from malted barley, which contains gluten. The vinegar-making process which we use breaks down gluten. We have had Artisan Malt Vinegar externally lab tested for gluten, and the most recent test showed gluten levels of 21 ppm (parts per million).
To give context, to be certified as ‘gluten free’ foods need to have 20 ppm or less, and foods with gluten content between 21 and 100 ppm can be labelled as ‘very low gluten’. So lab tests show Artisan Malt Vinegar is a very, very low gluten product.
However, Artisan Malt Vinegar is a craft product. The product does vary from batch to batch, we don’t have an in-house team of scientists in white coats to check each batch, and it isn’t economical for us to send each batch for external lab testing. We’re happy to give as much information as we can to enable customers to make their own decisions – but we do not certify Artisan Malt Vinegar as gluten-free or as a low gluten product.
